The first time I saw Dawn's Llama by Sassy Cheryl, I fell in love with the image. What can I say, I am an animal lover at heart. Being the curious person that I am, I did a little research on the llama and this is what I learned.
It is believed that the llama originated in the central plains of North America and migrated to South America 3 million years ago. By the end of the last ice age, they were extinct in North America.
Llamas are very social and curious and usually do not have difficultly approaching humans unless it is over-socialized. When this happens they treat humans like a fellow llama and one might be subjected to spitting, kicking or neck wrestling.
When aroused, the male will "orgle" (similar to gargling -- now isn't that romantic?), and will continue this sound to the finale, usually about 20 to 45 minutes later. A "cria" will arrive 11.5 months later weighting in around 20 to 30 pounds. Since a llama has an attached tongue and can only extended it about an 1.5 inch out of its mouth, mommy llamas do not lick their newborn clean, instead, they nuzzle and hum to it, a llama lullaby.
Okay, now tell the truth, how many of you stuck their tongue out to see how far it extended?
