Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway with Heather Long

X-Men meets Captain Tightpants meets Young Guns. Heather Long's Fevered Hearts series is all that an more. Today she's stopped by to share her latest book in that series and one(1) lucky reader will win a copy. Heather's known for writing different genres but she keeps it hot and sexy.

Meet Heather:
Heather Long lives in Texas with her family and their menagerie of animals. As a child, Heather skipped picture books and enjoyed the Harlequin romance novels by Penny Jordan and Nora Roberts that her grandmother read to her. Heather believes that laughter is as important to life as breathing and that the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus are very real. In the meanwhile, she is hard at work on her next novel.

Thanks to Kati and Jamie for having me as a guest today. I’m thrilled to talk about one of my favorite series. The Fevered Hearts books are very close to my heart (pardon the pun!). What I originally conceived as a series of novellas turned into an epic landscape, roaming the old west, where the water may be scarce, the ride is long and the men are as tough as the land they live upon. I remember being stunned that it last 80,000 words that first time around.

In the first novel, I introduced readers to Sam Kane, the honorable upstanding Marshal of Dorado and to Scarlett Morning Star, the Fevered girl raised in seclusion and sheltered by her adopted father and seven older brothers. One of those older brothers is Cody. Cody had a bumpy go of it in Marshal, choosing at the end of the book to leave Dorado and the Flying K behind when Sam and Scarlett married.

Brave are the Lonely is his story. It’s also another leg in Kid Kane’s journey. Kid is the youngest Kane sibling, he’s always felt a bit on the outside and he struggles with his own secrets. When Cody saw Kid leaving at the end of Marshal, he followed him. Brave is every bit the story of brotherhood, loyalty and friendship as it is about passion, love, forgiveness, and acceptance.

Cody can be ruthless, but his fierce protectiveness cannot be matched.

Here is an excerpt from Brave Are the Lonely:
Cody followed the curve of the wash trail Kid rode. The faint scent of water, rabbit, scrub brush and mice tickled his nose. The smaller animals went quiet in his passage and he left them be. He wasn’t hungry. Kid’s words echoed in his
ears.

His turn to hunt.

The wolf’s mouth fell open, tongue lolling in the wind, sampling the air. He was ever watchful for the dangerous scent of man. Luckily, they were traveling upwind, which brought the scents to him. He would know they were there long before they appeared. Kid was safe for the time being, which meant Cody could roam.

The young man’s frequent visits to every hovel they came across left the wolf bewildered. He refused to follow him to closely, the smell of unwashed bodies, cooking food and strangeness overwhelming. But he never strayed far.

He’d ambushed one angry husband who came after Kid at their first town and frightened off another at the third town. Kid’s insatiable appetites for female companionship didn’t make him discriminating. They’d even spent one rainy night
at a remote farmhouse. Cody in the barn with the horses while Kid seduced the absent farmer’s daughter. At least she didn’t have a husband.

The wolf understood the husband’s anger, the rage at Kid’s philandering. But Kid was pack. That meant Cody would protect him.

A long escarpment of rocky outcroppings beckoned. The sun-drenched stone would be warm in the air that turned progressively chilly the further west and higher up they went. Kid said they’d be in the mountains soon, but the distant peaks were closer than Kid believed. Cody grew up on a mountain, one didn’t have to go higher to find the colder air.

Home flashed through his mind. The scents of the lake, the rich pines, firs and cedars were fresh to his tongue. A familiar flame haired female splashing in the icy cold lake, heating the water at the edges until the boys could frolic there as well.

The howl tore out of his throat before he could stop it, hard, long and keening. Scarlett chose another. Cody understood that. She was happy. The man was happy for her.

The wolf missed her.

The land went silent around him, what few critters that hadn’t scrambled out of his way huddled quietly, sure that the end was near. Cody ignored them all. He’d caught the scent of deer the night before. He wanted venison, sick of rabbit, squirrel, grouse and fish. The wolf wouldn’t bother with it all, but Kid said it was his turn.

Now that you’ve had a glimpse at the book, all you have to do is leave a comment with your email address to be entered to win a free eCopy of Brave are the Lonely.

When death seemed preferable…

Mourning his mate drove fevered wolf shifter Cody out of Texas, but a brother’s need drags him back from the brink.

…and good deeds never go unpunished…
Gypsy princess Mariska only wants to protect her people and her freedom, but a dangerous choice puts her on a collision course with an angry wolf.

…the best thing that could happen to him…
When Cody touches Mariska, his wolf cannot escape the hunger that fills him. For Mariska, Cody’s touch brings her a pleasure she never imagined, but is it enough to heal his fractured soul?

Guest Post + Giveaway with Tamara Morgan

Men in kilts. We're big fans of 'em. Nothing is sexier than a man who can show his legs off wearing basically a skirt. Call it what you want boys but it's a plaid skirt no matter how you cut it: long or short. Tamara Morgan is sharing her recent release, LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD, with us today.

WELCOME TO THE BLOG TAMARA!!!

Meet Tamara:
Tamara Morgan is a romance writer and unabashed lover of historical reenactments—the more elaborate and geeky the costume requirements, the better. In her quest for modern-day history and intrigue, she has taken fencing classes, forced her child into Highland dancing, and, of course, journeyed annually to the local Renaissance Fair. These feats are matched by a universal love of men in tights, of both the superhero and codpiece variety.

Why We Love Men in Kilts by Tamara Morgan

There are few women alive who aren’t moved by the image of a strapping, robust man draped in a kilt. It doesn’t matter if he’s a popular actor (I’m looking at you, Gerard Butler) or just some random guy who likes to let it all hang out—if he’s got a kilt on, chances are pretty high I’m going to turn around for a second look. (And possibly a third. Or, if I can manage it, a secret snapshot with my phone.)

On a cognitive level, it doesn’t make much sense. Say your best friend calls you on the phone and tells you about this incredible new guy she’s met.

“He’s so hot,” she might gush, excitement making her breathy and high-pitched. “He wears this miniskirt, you know? And his legs are really pasty white and hairy, but he’s got them covered up to the knees with tube socks so you can’t see most of them. His knees are a little gnarled, too, and he likes to go around without underwear and sometimes wears a leather fanny pack that sits on top of his man bits. I can’t wait for you to meet him!”

I might question this woman’s taste in men…until she mentions that the miniskirt in question is crafted of plaid, and the fanny pack is the traditional sporran. Because now he’s not just some dude in a skirt.

He’s in a kilt. And he’s mine.

I have an explanation for why a man in a kilt is so appealing, and it can be summed up in one word: SWAGGER.

A man in a kilt has swagger, period. It takes quite a bit of confidence for a guy to walk around in a skirt, but it’s not the same kind of confidence that tells him to pop his collar or speak to women in a demeaning fashion. That kind of confidence is vanity—it’s cockiness, the belief that he is somehow above the rest of the world.

Swagger, on the other hand, has less to do with what a man wants you to think and more about his value as a human being. A man with swagger knows he’s in a skirt, knows he’s adhering to an outdated tradition valued by his father and grandfather, knows he’s one strong wind away from flashing the whole world. And you know what? He doesn’t give a damn.

That’s what makes him so delicious. He’s man. He’s in a skirt. And he’s not apologizing for any of it.

***

LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD:
It takes a real man to wear a kilt. And a real woman to charm him out of it.

It might be modern times, but Kate Simmons isn’t willing to live a life without at least the

illusion of the perfect English romance. A proud member of the Jane Austen Regency Re- Enactment Society, Kate fulfills her passion for courtliness and high-waisted gowns in the company of a few women who share her love of all things heaving.

Then she encounters Julian Wallace, a professional Highland Games athlete who could have stepped right off the covers of her favorite novels. He’s everything brooding, masculine, and, well, heaving. The perfect example of a man who knows just how to wear his high sense of honor—and his kilt.

Confronted with a beautiful woman with a tongue as sharp as his sgian dubh, Julian and his band of merry men aren’t about to simply step aside and let Kate and her gaggle of tea-sippers use his land for their annual convention. Never mind that “his land” is a state park—Julian was here first, and he never backs down from a challenge.

Unless that challenge is a woman unafraid to fight for what she wants...and whose wants are suddenly the only thing he can think about.

Warning: The historical re-enactments in this story contain very little actual history. Battle chess and ninja stars may apply.

Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway with Amelia Fayer

WELCOME TO THE BLOG TOUR:
Ever wander into the dark corner of the library and think that The Sexy could happen there with a very good looking man? Preferably a hot Brit. Or perhaps you've ogled that good looking librarian perched at the circulation desk just waiting to check you out. Er, check out your books for you. Amelia Fayer's LUST IN THE LIBRARY will show you that libraries are sexy.

WELCOME TO THE BLOG AMELIA!!!

Meet Amelia:
Amelia Fayer lives in New England with her husband within close range of an inspirational library. When she is not writing, she likes to read, hike, garden and knit (not necessarily in that order).

Where To Find Amelia: Author Site | Facebook

Thank you to the ladies at Romancing Rakes For the Love of Romance for having me here today.

Usually when people think of the library, they only think of a bunch of shelves with books on them all lined up. A lot of libraries, though, have all sorts of interesting nooks and crannies in which to indulge in a little ‘extracurricular reading.’

Amelia Fayer’s Top Five Places for “Lust in the Library”

5) The Copy Room – Plenty of stuff to lean against or prop yourself up on and you can take home a souvenir.

“I think we’d look better from this angle.”

4) The Reading Room – Usually this room is so quiet you can hear a pin drop. Perhaps it needs a little excitement.

“Shh, this is a library.”

3) Special Collections – All those old fusty folios need to be shaken up every now and then. The only reason this isn’t ranked higher is because all the double entendres might get tedious.

“I’d like to see your ‘Special Collection.’”

2) Circulation Desk – If he’s going to check you out, might as well follow the rules.

“I’m due back on the 17th.”

1) Up against a bookshelf, preferably one of love poetry – Having two of my most favorite things within reaching distance? Perfect. And after, you can make him read to you.

“Here, read some Barrett Browning please.”

Did I forget any place? Screw up the order? Let me know in the comments!

LUST IN THE LIBRARY:

Some like it hot, and some like it in the reference section.

Sara is having a love affair with books. But, since books can't make love to you, it means she's in the middle of a very long dry spell. Until a sexy Brit shows up. Suddenly she's learning just how stimulating a library can be up against a bookcase, behind the card catalog, on the circulation desk…

Meanwhile: Veronica is incredibly frustrated. While Sara and her new man are using the library as their personal adult playground, she's stuck with only her thesis and her sexual fantasies. But Andrew, her crush, isn't above using his assets to get Veronica right where he wants her: alone, in a darkened corner of the stacks. Who knew reading could be this pleasurable?

Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway with Shana Galen

Did y'all enjoy the excerpt from THE ROGUE PIRATE'S BRIDE? I know I did! I've been a fan of Shana's since reading LORD AND LADY HOTNESS SPY and ended up reading the Sons of the Revolution series to pass the time until the stunning conclusion was released. I even managed to find a copy of Blackthorne's Bride (which was nominated for a RITA®) and Good Groom Hunting to feed my need for action, adventure, romance, handsome rogues, independent ladies and a hint of danger. At least until the next book. Today, Shana is sharing her characters with us and who would play the leading lady and leading man if Hollywood ever came knocking on her door.

HOWDY SHANA!!!!

Meet Shana:
Shana Galen is the author of numerous fast-paced adventurous Regency historical romances, including the Rita-nominated Blackthorne's Bride. Her books have been sold worldwide, including Japan, Brazil, Russia, Spain, Turkey, and the Netherlands, and have been featured in the Rhapsody and Doubleday Book Clubs. A former English teacher in Houston’s inner city, Shana now writes full time. She’s a wife, a mother, and an expert multi-tasker. She loves to hear from readers: visit her website at www.shanagalen.com or see what she’s up to daily on Facebook and Twitter.

The Rogue Pirate’s Bride Casting Couch

Hello, Romancing Rakes! It’s great to be back. I had so much fun visiting at the December Joyathon. Thank you, Kati, for having me back! (Welcome back!)

The wonderful thing about being a writer is you get paid for creating characters. Often characters come to me fully formed. It’s clear to me, before I even write their first word, what they look like, sound like, dress like, and more. But occasionally, a writer likes a little bit of, shall we say, inspiration?

In my new historical romance, The Rogue Pirate's Bride, Bastien, the hero is a twin. I’d already written his brother Armand’s story, so I knew Bastien had dark hair and cobalt blue eyes. He’s also a pirate, so he has a sort of rugged, roguish look about him. If the book were made into a movie (and I’m totally open to that, by the way!), I’d love for Henry Cavill to play Bastien. I think he has that charmingly debauched look about him. Don’t you agree?

Raeven, as her name implies, has dark hair and green eyes. There are so many beautiful raven-haired actresses, but if I had my choice, I’d want Ewa da Cruz to play her. Ewa da Cruz is actually the model on the cover of my novel Lord and Lady Spy, but I never pictured Sophia looking like that. To me, her hair was lighter, her skin paler. But Ms. da Cruz would be perfect for Raeven.

Another major character in the book is Percy, Raeven’s friend and shipmate. Percy is blond and pale, and Raeven is always getting him into trouble. I picture William Moseley in Percy’s role. He played Peter in the Chronicles of Narnia movies. He’s got a sweetness and innocence with an inner core of strength that would be perfect for Percy.

Mr. Maine is Bastien’s quartermaster. He has a shock of red hair and freckles. He’s very English in appearance. I’d cast Zack Ward in this role. He’s been in lots of movies and TV shows, but he’s probably best known for playing Scut Farcus in A Christmas Story. But he has definitely grown up!

Finally, I’d cast Raeven’s father, Admiral Russell. He’s a large man with a red nose and salt and pepper hair. He’s got a lot of authority, so I’d need a commanding actor. I’d pick Jim Carter. He plays Mr. Carson on Masterpiece Theater’s Downton Abbey.

Who are some of your favorite actors and actresses? If you’ve read The Rogue Pirate’s Bride, how do my choices stack up when compared to yours? I’ll be checking in all day to read your comments. I’m also pleased to offer copies of The Rogue Pirate’s Bride to two readers who comment (U.S. and Canadian residents only).

THE ROGUE PIRATE'S BRIDE:
Revenge should be sweet, but it may cost him everything...
The Marquis de Valère escaped certain death in the French Revolution and is now an infamous privateer. Out to avenge the death of his mentor, Bastien discovers himself astonishingly out of his depth when confronted with a beautiful, daring young woman who is out for his blood...

Forgiveness is unthinkable, but it may be her only hope...
British Admiral's daughter Raeven Russell believes Bastien responsible for her fiancé's death. But once the fiery beauty crosses swords with Bastien, she's not so sure she really wants him to change his wicked ways...

5 Keys to Successful Series Plotting by Cerise DeLand

During my twenty-eight years of writing fiction, I have penned—among more than 40+ other novels—three historical romance series. Each one has taught me by doing. My latest, THE STANHOPE CHALLENGE of Regency erotic romances, helped me hone my skills and hopefully this short article will help you do the same for yours!

Every series must be more than a collection of stories about a group of people who happen to know each other. They must have a few characteristics of time, place and challenge to drive the quality of your plotting and your thematic rendering of them.
Here in a nutshell are the five keys I think most useful to creating satisfying series for you, the writer, and for your readers.

And while the keys are useful for any type of series in any genre, I have written this using terms of the romance genre.

1. Shared Experience of one set of key characters

Whether heroes or heroines or a combo thereof, the stars of a series comprise a natural group of people who have one thing in common. While immediately, the author would think, ah, well, if they are related, is that not enough?
And the answer is a most definite no.

While families work well as stars, so do other groups. Examples might include women who are friends or debutants of the season, men who have gone to school together, who play together, who were in the Peninsular War or on the same battlefield. All of these provide a similar background and experience on which you can play and develop.
The next challenge is to provide them each with a proper period and setting in which to mature as characters.

2. A Timeline for the entire series provides a realistic canvas on which to paint. A firm concept of why the first story begins where it does and why is as vital to a strong development as the second, the third, on to the very last book.
The conflicts of characters are different, say, during wartime, than during peace.
Characters who suffered tragic loss of wealth or lands under one king, but regain them under another lends a different quality and substance to the progression of each novel and the works as a whole.
The task of the writer is to use the dramatic realities of the period to highlight and underscore the challenges of each hero and heroine. Each person is, in his and her own way, merely a product of his or her age.
He or she cannot escape the conditions of their time on earth and the variety of what they might experience comes out in your plotting.

3. Diversity of plots provide excitement, yet allow for the display of the theme in unique methods.

Examples in romance wherein the theme is destruction of boring status quo could include:
A youngest child who is the comic one, providing witty dialogue. But the hero she meets is staid, depressed even.
A middle child who is the ignored one. But she writes a risqué play, makes a spectacle of herself by running away to Paris to join the opera, and the man who interests her is a politician, dour indeed.
An oldest sibling who has nothing but his pride of place as his main treasure and the woman he adores believes it imperative to be impulsive, dance barefoot in the garden, etc.

4. Finally, and most important, yet often missing from many series is an over-arching theme which gives a major resolution to the challenges met by all heroes and heroines. This overarching theme gives the series cohesion and a sense of historical sweep. Because Historical series do focus on like-minded or experienced individuals, superlative themes must be concluded with meticulous care to give it viability as a work presented in many parts.
This tying up includes resolving old conflicts with reverence to the plots of each book. No, not an easy thing to do! And therefore, this must be planned so that the last book gives the final conclusion to the collective journey of those characters in each work.
Without such a theme, the books in the series will lack focus and in the end, no more drama than a single title book.

5. A series is written and read for many reasons. Not merely to illustrate the challenges of a period or a class, a series conveys a sense of the era and the people who lived in it in more concrete, panoramic ways than a single work.

Ensure that you begin with a set of challenges for each work, and much like those on a chessboard, work with them until you see the strategy you wish to play.
Once you have done this, you will become enchanted with the process.
I daresay your readers will become enchanted with your novels—and all your series!

I do hope you give my Regency series a go: LORD STANHOPE’S IMPROPER PROPOSAL, LADY FEATHERSTONE’S FERVENT AFFAIR (with a novella inside about a certain LADY RAMSEY), MISS DARLING’S INDECENT OFFER and the 4th and last, THE BASTARD’S PASSIONATE PRIZE.

Dream Wedding and Valentines by Tawny Weber

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for romance. Hmm, given that I write romance novels, that might not be a major confession, I suppose. The bigger question would be did my love of romance feed my desire to write romance novels, or did my writing romance novels just intensify my love of romance. Ahh, the chicken and the egg *g*

One of my favorite dedicated-to-romance days is Valentine’s. And one of my favorite dedicated to romance events is a wedding. Since most of my stories end with the declaration of love, rather than the wedding, it was such a thrill to be able to incorporate both in my latest Undercover Operatives release, SEX, LIES AND VALENTINES. Not the hero and heroine’s wedding, though – but the wedding of the hero of the first book in the series, SEX, LIES AND MISTLETOE, Caleb and his true love, Pandora. Danita is a guest at the wedding, which is a little awkward since she came to town pretending to be the best man’s girlfriend, with the intention of arresting the father of the groom. Okay, so that might not sound romantic itself, but I promise –the story, and the wedding, were.

Here’s a peek:
It was a testament to her respect for Hunter—their history and the fact that he was her boss—that she didn’t just turn and run.

“Fine. Until the toast,” she agreed. And not one second longer, she vowed as she slid onto the glossy bench. Her car was out front, packed and ready to go. If she thought she could get away with sliding all the way across this bench and heading right back up the aisle without Hunter busting her, she’d do it in a heartbeat.

Then the music started. Caleb and Gabriel stepped out of the antechamber together. She sighed a little at the sight of them, so gorgeous and elegant in steel gray tuxedos, each with a red rose on their lapel.

As if drawn by a magnet, Gabriel’s eyes immediately found her. He offered a warm, charming smile that immediately set off her warning radar. Why was he smiling at her? What was he up to? And why did it make her stomach tumble like a giddy virgin?

His gaze narrowed, his eyes heating as they wandered over her. Danita had to force herself not to glance down to make sure her blouse was buttoned.

Then the music changed. With difficulty, Danita tore her gaze from Gabriel’s and stood, turning to watch Pandora walk down the aisle on Cassiopeia’s arm. Danita was shocked when tears filled her eyes at the obvious love between the two women. Pandora wore traditional white, her gown a vision of froth and lace with a sweetheart neckline and a subtle hearts embroidered over the satin. Looking like the Queen of Hearts, Cassiopeia wore a flowing ruby caftan, crystals dangling and roses arranged in her hair.

Terrified to realize that she wanted the same thing—love and marriage and family—Danita fell, rather than sat, back on the pew. The ceremony was a blur as she struggled with the idea of marriage, commitment and all of the possibilities that came with it. Especially as the only person she’d make that promise to would be Gabriel.

When her eyes met his again, she wasn’t able to keep all the wishes and hopes in her heart from showing on her face.

But instead of looking away, or worse like seeing that freaked him out, Gabriel held her gaze. Through the entire ceremony. By the end, her hands were shaking.

She had to get out of here.

As soon as the happy couple made their way back up the aisle, she was out of her seat and heading for the door.
So what do you think? Are you a fan of Valentine’s Day? And how about weddings? What’s the most romantic wedding tradition you’ve ever seen or heard of?

SEX, LIES AND VALENTINES:
My naughty valentine...

Con artist Gabriel Black just got busted. By a babe. Drool-worthy (and clearly sneaky) FBI agent Danita Cruz is forcing Gabriel to choose between hard time and scamming his own family for an undercover sting. Now he has to present Danita to his family as his girlfriend. And it's the perfect opportunity to get wickedly even with her...

But Danita has some tricks of her own, and Gabriel's control begins slipping away as raw sexual energy takes over. Their sham relationship starts feeling a lot like...well, the real deal. The Big Question is, will overwhelming desire be enough to make a liar go legit?

Melissa Schroeder Guest Post and Giveaway

So, I'm really excited about this. I am a HUGE fan of Melissa Schroeder's Harmless series and today she's here to talk about her new paranormal series. So lets give a nice warm welcome to Melissa!

First, I want to thank Jamie for allowing me to pop in here and talk about my newest release!

If you don’t know me my name is Melissa Schroeder and I write in time periods from historical to futuristic and heat levels from sensual to erotic. I am a military wife who is being forced to live in another bug place, but I only have 2 years left! Wahoo, lol.

My newest book coming out this month is The Cursed Clan: Callum. It is the first of a five book paranormal series. The first book is a bit of a discovery for the reader and the heroine, Dr. Phoebe Chilton, and with each book, the magic and mystery will grow. There are five cousins, Callum, Angus, Logan, Fletcher and Anice, who will each have their own book as they race to break the curse. If you know me from my bestselling erotic Harmless series, I will warn you that these books are a bit different than those. They are of course paranormal and not quite as erotic, but I promise they are highly sensual. I really loved Callum and Phoebe and I hope that readers do too.

Meet me around the web:

Here is a little tidbit from the book.
Preorder from Are.

As Laird, Callum Lennon feels he has always failed to protect his cousins. Callum’s impulsiveness caused the death of his father and the experience has scarred not only his body, but his soul. From that point on, he made sure to always go with the more logical choice in every matter. When his younger cousin Angus finds clues that might help break the curse, Callum begrudgingly hires Phoebe Chilton to investigate. Callum doesn’t like bringing outsiders into their family affairs. Their life would become fodder for the tabloids if anyone were to find out about the curse. It doesn’t help that the instant he meets Dr. Chilton he’s attracted. But, he doesn’t really have a choice because she might be their last hope.
An expert in archeology, Phoebe has always been dwarfed by her parents’ shadow. Their high standards had her in college by thirteen and earning a second PhD by twenty-two. But her career and her broken marriage have left her needing something more than just diplomas and degrees. She wants to prove that her interest in legends, especially Celtic legends, is as important as her parents’ work. When the Lennon family contacts her, she sees the opportunity to win a massive research grant. With a long-time rival breathing down her back, she jumps at the Lennons’ offer her, hoping it will ensure her the grant. But uncovering the Lennon family secrets, and her attraction to Callum, could prove more than she can handle.

Forces outside the family are determined to ensure that they fail. When an old enemy threatens both the well being of the clan and the fragile new love, Callum will have to choose between believing his mind or his heart.

“I protect what is mine. I’ll not allow you to use Angus.”

She moved away from the counter, her body tense with anger. “I have never used another person, especially in that way. You’ve convinced yourself that I decided to somehow use my considerable wiles on your cousin to somehow gain who knows what.”

When she said it like that, he felt juvenile and petty.

“Don’t worry,
Mr. Lennon. I’ll avoid your cousins from now on.”

Which is what he wanted, but at the same time he felt like the lowest form of scum even if it was the best choice. The diary could hold their secrets, and the less she connected to them, the better. They just needed it translated, and for her to leave. As soon as that happened, he would be free of this affliction, he was sure.

“I’ll do my work and take my meals in my room.”

He heard the hurt in her voice. His need to banish Phoebe was as unexplainable as the need to ease her pain. She attempted to brush past him, but he stepped in front of her, blocking her one exit.

“I didn’t say you needed to avoid my cousins.” It was what he wanted, needed, but here he was contradicting his own thoughts, again.

When she looked at him, there was no humor in her gaze, no studied interest as he’d seen before. Now, all he saw was loneliness and he ached.

“No. I’ll finish my task and leave. I know you must have a very good reason, although I can’t understand what it could be. I will respect your wishes.”

Again, she tried to move past him, but he refused to budge. That same fresh scent of her reached his senses, seducing him.  Even as he was reaching for her, his mind was screaming
stop. He ignored it, and every other protective instinct. The only thing roaring through his head was to take, to claim.

“It isna my family that has me worried, lass.” The moment he wrapped his hand around her upper arm, her head shot up, surprise lighting her eyes her mouth falling open in surprise. “It seems being around you is no’ good for my peace of mind.”

He jerked her against him. She gasped, the sound filled with both fear and excitement. Arousal spiked and his body craved—demanded—more intimate contact. Knowing it was wrong, even knowing it was dangerous, he bent his head and took possession of her luscious mouth.

Woo! Is anyone else excited about Callum? I sure am! Melissa is giving away one e-copy of Callum (opened internationally) to one lucky commenter. So tell me... Are you a fan of Melissa's books? Are you excited for a new paranormal series? Does the thought of a family curse intrigue you? Don't forget to leave your email address (ninja style of course) when you comment. You have until Sunday to leave a comment and I'll announce a winner on Monday the 23.

The Sibling Connection by Tawny Weber
SEX, LIES AND MIDNIGHT, the second book on my Undercover Operatives series, is out now, and I have to say one of the things I love best about this story was the chance to explore the sibling connection between the heroine, Maya, and the hero from my December Undercover Operatives book, SEX LIES AND MISTLETOE. There’s always so much fun to be had when siblings are involved – at least, fun for the reader (the characters, maybe not so much *g*) Siblings are the ones who know all your secrets, just what button to push to get the reaction they want, and how to put life back into perspective after they’ve turned it upside down. But most of all, siblings give insights into the characters that we just can’t get any other way. Backstory and sources of conflict, a clearer idea of why emotional issues are what they are, and hopefully a support system the character can turn to when things get rough (aka, the dark moment of the story).

Home for the first time in 6 years, here’s Maya’s visit with her brother. Knowing the trip home was going to have a ton of challenges, she brought along her own distraction, in the form of hottie hero, Simon Barton.
Now was the time to man up and play his part. Simon had promised Maya distraction and a buffer. With that in mind, he stepped closer and slipped his hand into hers.

After a brief spasm, like she might pull away, her fingers clenched his. She looked up at him with a grateful smile, which did nothing to hide the pain in her eyes.

“Let’s sit,” he suggested, keeping his words low and intimate. To jolt her out of the funk he could see her sliding into, he lifted their joined hands to his lips so he could brush a kiss over the inside of her wrist. Her breath caught. Like before on the front sidewalk, she seemed to forget her nerves in favor of a little love play.

Which clearly pissed off the men in her life. Too bad. At the moment he didn’t care how it affected his case. Ignoring the twin glares coming at him from opposite ends of the room, Simon wrapped his arm around Maya’s shoulder to lead her to a purple velvet couch. They sat, close enough that her thigh was almost on top of his. As soon as he pulled his arm from around her shoulders, she gripped his hand again.

A surge of protective instincts rose to match the ever-growing, and slightly disconcerting, rising lust brought on by the feel of her warm body pressed against his.

The lust was totally inappropriate, especially considering the situation and other people in the room. But, dammit, her thigh felt so good against his. She was so close, he could smell the flowery spice of her perfume and the sweet apple of her shampoo.

Breathing deep, mentally breaking down an AK-47 to try and distract his body from embarrassing him, Simon leaned back into the couch cushion. He wasn’t sure if he was pleased or just tormented when Maya followed, her body curving into his.

“So what’s the deal?” Caleb snapped, his words shooting across the room with the speed and velocity of a bullet. “Where’d you two meet? How long have you been a... thing?”

“The length of my things are none of your business, big brother,” Maya returned, offering him a saccharine smile. She sounded more amused than irritated, though. “I’d think you’d remember that, even after all these years.”

Brow arched, Simon’s gaze shifted from brother to sister. They were too busy grinning at each other to clarify the memory for the rest of the room, though.

“Caleb and Gabriel used to think big brother status gave them some say in Maya’s dating life,” Tobias offered, untangling himself from the brunette’s clutches and coming into the room to take his own seat. “She let them get away with it when it served her purpose. Like getting rid of too-ardent admirers. But mostly she kept their noses out of her business.”

“How do you keep Caleb out of anything?” Pandora wondered. True love or a bad case of hero worship, Simon wondered. Then she continued with a cute little laugh. “He’s so bossy and pushy. I might need a few tips, Maya.”

“A solid right hook, plenty of blackmail material and when necessary, a talent for sneaking down the trellis after dark,” Maya told her future sister-in-law. Her tone was amused, her words easy and light. But her fingers still gripped Simon’s like he was a lifeline.
Clearly, I love the interplay of bringing siblings into stories. That family dynamic plays out with such fun and drama. How about you? Are you a fan of sibling stories? How about of your own siblings, if you have any *g* (and yes, I adore my brothers *ggg*)

SEX, LIES AND MIDNIGHT
He's lying. She's lying. And before long, they're lying. Together. In bed.

Born into a con artist family, Maya Black abandoned the grifting life to live on the straight and narrow (and somewhat dull) years ago. But when her family is threatened---and the swindlers are on the verge of becoming the swindled---Maya swings into action. All she needs is a stand-in boyfriend, and the charming, tasty-as-sin Simon Barton will do quite nicely, thanks.

But Simon has a little lie of his own. He's FBI, and Maya is his inside track to her less-savory relations. It's a mutual using, which quickly turns into a scorching mutual attraction.

In fact, their naughty little sexcapades are the only things they aren't faking!

Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway with Roni Loren

WELCOME TO THE BLOG TOUR:

You all know how much of a sucker I am when it comes to stunning covers and well, Roni Loren's debut novel is no different. Look at the cover. Good golly Miss Molly, that's one sexy, sexy cover. Today, Roni is hanging out with us here at Romancing Rakes sharing all that goes into a sex scene. What?! We're all adults here. I find it fascinating how authors go about writing these scenes wondering if they have some sort of ritual or outline or what have you to get them through it. Let's give Roni a warm welcome:

HOWDY RONI!!!!

Meet Roni:
Roni wrote her first romance novel at age fifteen when she discovered writing about boys was way easier than actually talking to them. Since then, her flirting skills haven’t improved, but she likes to think her storytelling ability has. Though she’ll forever be a New Orleans girl at heart, she now lives in Dallas with her husband and son. If she’s not working on her latest sexy story, you can find her reading, watching reality television, or indulging in her unhealthy addiction to rockstars, er, rock concerts. Yeah, that's it. Her debut novel, CRASH INTO YOU, will be published by Berkley Heat January 3, 2012.

"Anatomy of a Sex Scene" by Roni Loren
First, I want to thank Kati for inviting me over here! I don’t write historical romance, but I definitely write (and love) rakes, so I’m excited to be here. : ) [We don't discriminate here at Romancing Rakes. We'll take our hotties any way we can and in any position.]

As an erotic romance author, I get asked about sex way more than is socially acceptable. Thankfully, people (mostly) aren’t asking about my sex life, but I do often get the question—how do you write a love scene without it coming across as corny (or porn-y)?

Love scenes can be quite a challenge. I’ve read some that I’ve found myself skimming through because it started sounding like blah blah blah slot A tab B mechanics with no emotion. And I’ve read others that used so much euphemistic language that at the end I’m left wondering—wait, did they actually do it? Or were they just watering flowers and talking about swords?

So when I sit down to write the love scenes for my own books, I try to make sure that I have a few key components present.

  1. Tension
This is the be-all-end-all for me. If adequate tension hasn’t been created between the couple and built up beforehand, the love scene won’t hold my interest. For instance, if a book opens up with the characters already in bed, why would I even care about them or what they’re doing? That’s not to say you can’t have a love scene in chapter one; I’ve seen it done well. But those authors built up tension quickly. I need to feel on the edge of my seat and be just dying for the two (or three—I do write erotic romance after all, lol) people to touch each other.

  2. Emotion
Without this, the love scene will turn porn-y. I need to know that these people are being affected on a deeper level than just the physical. It doesn’t have to always be about love—though they are working towards that if it’s a romance—but they need to be emotionally invested in the act.

  3. Senses
When I write a love scene, I try to imagine it as if it’s happening in slow motion. It’s not just about touch—all the senses are involved. So I try to press pause in my head and imagine what the hero or heroine would be experiencing in that snapshot in time—the scent of candles mixing with his aftershave, the sound of his breath, the taste of his skin. Those things help draw us into the book and forget that it’s just words on a page.

  4. Dialogue
This may be a personal preference, but I like when there’s talking in a love scene. Not full out conversations necessarily but some dialogue can help add to it. The dialogue in a love scene can set the whole tone—Are they playful and teasing? Are they intense and focused? Are they into dirty talk? I write BDSM so dialogue often plays a big role because the Dom is issuing orders. It adds a level of intensity that wouldn’t be there if they were quiet.

  5. Change
Every love scene should serve a purpose and move the story forward. The couple must be changed after each scene in some way—even if it’s minor. Maybe she now trusts him more. Or maybe it freaks one of them out because they feel themselves falling for the other and he/she backs away. Often the early love scenes make things worse for the couple. Sex always complicates things. And I think love scenes should be written such that IF you skipped them, you would miss important components of the story. If they weren’t necessary for the story, they shouldn’t be there. : )

So those are my big things I look for in a love scene. What are your favorite components? Have you ever found yourself skimming a love scene—why do you think it lost your interest? Which of your favorite authors are masters at writing great love scenes?

CRASH INTO YOU:
Brynn LeBreck has dedicated herself to helping women in crisis, but she never imagined how personal her work would get, or where it would take her. Her younger sister is missing, suspected to be hiding from cops and criminals alike at a highly secretive BDSM retreat—a place where the elite escape to play out their most extreme sexual fantasies. To find her Brynn must go undercover as a sexual submissive. Unfortunately, The Ranch is invitation only. And the one Master who can get her in is from the darkest corner of Brynn’s past.

Brynn knows what attorney Reid Jamison is like once stripped of his conservative suit and tie. Years ago she left herself vulnerable only to have him crush her heart. Now she needs him again. Back on top. And he’s all too willing to engage. But as their primal desires and old wounds are exposed, the sexual games escalate—and so does the danger. Their hearts aren’t the only things at risk. Someone else is watching, playing by his own rules. And his game could be murder.

*CRASH INTO YOU is told in chapters alternating between the present and ten years earlier. This is from a “past” chapter.*

“That’s one of the things I like about you. You don’t seem to give a damn about who my family is, so I can just relax around you.”

She laughed. “Yeah, once I found out you couldn’t fire me, you lost all shot of me kissing your ass.”

He slipped a hand onto her hip and pulled her closer, their bodies almost touching. “So what’s your stance on kissing other things?”

Every muscle in her body strained to move forward, to close the sliver of distance between them, but she held still. “Probably not a good idea since we work together.”

He smiled and shook his head. “See, you’re always such a half-empty kind of girl. Working together means we’ll get paid to hang out with each other.”

“And everybody in the office will think I’m hanging out with you for the wrong reasons.”

He shrugged. “That’s why we don’t tell. It’s none of their business anyway.”

She chewed her lip. “I like you, Reid, but I don’t know . . . it’s just complicated. I’ve got a lot—”

He put a finger over her mouth, hushing her. “Stop overthinking things, Brynn. It doesn’t have to be so complex. I know you don’t bullshit, so I’m not going to either. Since the first day I met you, I haven’t stopped thinking about what it would be like to touch you.” He cupped her chin and ran his thumb over her lips. “To taste you. I leave the office every day fighting a hard-on because just hearing your voice sets me off.”

She swallowed hard, the blunt words and his finger on her lips throwing gasoline on the flickering flame of longing she’d been fighting since they’d left the office.

“So in about three seconds, I’m going to kiss you. If you don’t want that, you tell me to stop, and I’ll never try again.” He curled his hand around the back of her neck, his gaze tattooing her. “One . . . two . . .”
