She's worked for the CIA (international woman of mystery?), won a chunk of change on Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud, started a feud between John Rosemond (family psychologist and parenting expert) and Dr. T. Berry Brazelton (renowned pediatrician) over the topic of potty training, spent her junior year of college at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, pulled pints of ale in a university pub, dated a man in a kilt (how's that for inspiration?), kissed Richard Dawson of Family Feud fame, is one of seven kids, a certified English teacher and married 21 years to Chuck, a Commander in the US Navy Reserves, has 3 musically inclined kids and a Beatles fan.

Kati R: Who is Kieran during the holidays? (author, gift giver, last minute shopper, baker)
Kieran K: Definitely last-minute gift shopper…if you call last-minute starting in December. The way technology moves now, sometimes the "good stuff" doesn't come out until late in the year anyway, and my kids' lists can change at the last minute. So anyway, through trial and error, I've found that if I buy too early, sometimes the gift is no longer "cool" by Christmas. Also, I like the adrenaline rush of really shopping around Christmastime, the way people did in the old days before commercialism intruded on the spirit of the holidays.

I also love to bake cookies for the neighbors and teachers. I can make a great gingerbread house all from scratch--those kits you can buy now are missing the best part of gingerbread house making…the wonderful smell of the baking gingerbread! My favorite cookie to make, besides my family's sugar cookie recipe, is caramel-filled chocolate pecan cookies.

I'm not a big party goer at Christmas. I prefer to celebrate at home with the family with board games and cocoa, watching Christmas movies, and going to see the Christmas lights at a nearby park. I don't do a big rush of open houses every weekend. My sister does, and I know she loves it, but I generally don't go unless it's a really close friend or family member hosting. So one or two parties at the most for me, and usually with family, the neighbors, or close friends.

Oh, and I always go see the Holiday Festival of Lights one night, where you drive around a county park and look at a gazillion light displays. I also love to go to a local hotel for a Christmas tea with my daughter and my sisters and mom…those two things are ALWAYS on my schedule!

KR: What is you favorite thing about the holidays?
KK: Oh, this is hard. I love everything! But if I have to choose one thing, my favorite thing about the holidays is the music. I love Christmas music.

KR: Do you write more or less during the holidays?
KK: I wish I could write less, but generally, I'm writing as much as I need to in order to meet my deadline, which means that sometimes I'm writing like crazy during the holidays!!! Not on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, though.

KR: If you’ve written a holiday themed/titled book, what is it about? If you have not, would you write a holiday themed/titled book in the future?
KK: One of my big dreams is to have a Christmas-themed Regency out on the shelves. Before I was published, that was my sweet treat from my husband…he'd run out, starting in November, and buy up all the Christmas-themed novellas for me, and I'd read them through the month of December. Now I don't have time to read them all! I've been so busy writing that I have to save up and read just a few. Meanwhile, I'm going to start looking into getting my own Christmas stories out there. (Oh! I love Christmas-themed books.)

KR: Which of your heroes would you go on a sleigh ride with? (with permission from the heroine of course)
KR: I would definitely go on a sleigh ride with Duncan Lattimore, the Earl of Chadwick. He's my latest hero and the first hero in my new series, The House of Brady, which premiers in 2012. I love Duncan for a lot of reasons. One big reason is the fact that he's a family man. But another is that he is SO cute and he's a great kisser. He's dark and reserved--until you get to know him. The real Duncan isn't reserved at all!! And Marcia, my heroine, gets to know him well--really well, LOL!! (Oh what a tease! I look forward to this series.)

KR: What was the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
KK: When my husband was in Afghanistan for a year with the military, he managed to send a box of presents back home to my sister-in-law's house, where my kids and I went for Christmas. It was such a surprise! We couldn't have him for Christmas, but these special gifts that he'd bought for us in Afghanistan were very cool…I was really touched by how his family had kept the box a secret and how thoughtful my husband was. Then we got to talk to him on Skype that day for a whole hour. So that was also part of the best Christmas gift I've ever received.

KR: Real tree or fake tree?

KK: Both. We have a real tree you see when you walk into the house, usually 8 to 10 feet tall. But in the den, we have a cute fake tree that we pop up like an umbrella. And then I have tiny fake ones in each bedroom. They sit on the bureaus, sort of like nightlights. I like to keep things festive in every room.


KR: Specific gifts or gift cards?
KK: I give specific gifts 95% of the time. Occasionally, there will be a person in the family impossible to shop for, so I might get them a gift card if that's what they really want. As for what *I* like, I love any gift...gift cards to my favorite stores, surprise gifts, anything!! Honestly, I like the whole process better than the outcome. I care more that someone thought of me than I do about what they got me.

KR: Fruit cake or gingerbread?
KK: Gingerbread!! The smell of baking gingerbread can't be beat. I have a cute little trick for making gingerbread people…use your garlic press to make them some hair from some dough. I learned this from a neighbor a long time ago. Kids LOVE making gingerbread hair!! (I shall have to try that. *note to self: get garlic press*)

KR: Just enough decorations or “every tree lighted, blow up snowglobe, snow man in the yard” decorations?
KK: Aww, I love when people go all out! I think we're a "medium" family in that we always have outdoor lighting, but on the bushes, not the roofline. And inside, I used to go crazy when the kids were younger with decorations everywhere, but now that they're older, we have a more "thoughtful" Christmas scheme inside…the tree, some pretty candles, an Advent wreath, little Christmas decorations here and there, and um, a big plastic Santa that we used to put outside but now keep inside by the front door. I plug him in for a soft red glow every morning when we wake up. He's "ironic" in the coziest sense, LOL!

KR: Home for the holidays or visiting relatives?
KK: We alternate…every other year, we go to my husband's family's house. But otherwise, we stay home. My parents live nearby, so we get to see them the years we stay home. The one exception I made to this rule was the year my husband went to Afghanistan. That was a year we were supposed to stay home, but I told my parents that I wanted to be with my husband's family that year. I know it made my husband really happy to know we were all together, and it made me so happy, too, to share Christmas with his mom and dad and the whole family…as I mentioned earlier, we got to talk to him on Skype, and it really bolstered his spirits to see us together.

KR: What are you looking forward to in the new year?
KK: I'm really looking forward to seeing our economy improve, quite frankly, not only ours in the USA but all over the world. That might sound kind of cold unless you're a person who's been affected by the downturn. Then you know what I'm talking about, LOL!!! A little more money in everyone's pockets will go a long way to getting us out of the doldrums. (more money for romance books!)

I miss the upbeat, hopeful spirit of Americans…we all seem pretty cynical these days, and that's a downer in a subtle way, every day. So I honestly look forward to 2012 as the year that everything turns around and we get the old "vibe" back.

• What are you currently reading?
Any Given Christmas by Candis Terry. This is the second book in her Sugar Shack series. The title is a play on Any Given Sunday. It involves an injured football player who is going back home to spend time with his crazy family for Christmas. I just started reading it.

Pride and Passion by Charlotte Featherstone. The second book in the Breathren Guardians series. Hmm, do you notice a pattern? I'm reading quite a few series. Anyway, it's got a really cool beginning. Dabbling in the dark arts. This should prove to be a fantastic read. I'm going to have to go back and read the first book in the series.

Lord of the Wolfyn by Jessica Andersen. The third book in the Royal House of Shadows series and I am now dying to get my hands on the first two. This takes the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood to the next level. I love a good twist on a classic.


A Love by Any Measure by Killian McRae. I'm still struggling a little with this book. In order for the girl to keep her home, she must submit to the attentions of the lord. He's not longer the boy she knew. I haven't gotten far. :(



• What did you recently finish reading?

Sweet Magik by Penny Watson. In keeping with my holiday book reading theme, this was fun, whimsical read but peppered with danger, dark magic and one angry elf. Hilarious! This is the second book in the Klaus Brothers series. Yes, Santa has five sons who help the family business. Oskar Klaus, the youngest and a totally punk snowboarder has been coasting through life flirting with the snow bunnies. Enter Kiana Grant, dressed down librarian complete with the glasses. Read my review.

If You Give A Girl A Viscount by Kieran Kramer. A fun, laugh out loud conclusion to the Impossible Bachelors series. It's got all the Cinderella elements with a twist. Prince Charming is a viscount, Cinderella is a Highland lass, the stepfamily come from Cheapside, there's a shoemaker named Mr. Glass. If you've got a quirky sense of humor, this book is for you. Read my review.

The Price of Temptation by Lecia Cornwall. This was another fantastic read. Adultery, danger, spies, betrayal, treason and of course, sultry kisses and hot loving. The wife of a traitor to the crown is being watched day and night in hopes of finding the whereabouts of the traitorous husband. There's a coveted flag supposedly a lucky charm of sorts and a dashing hero who must clear his name of treason. 

Forever Mine by Delilah Marvelle. A prequel to Marvelle's new Rumor series. Leaves more questions than answers but has me wanting the first book in the series. Badly.

Lady Northam's Wicked Surrender by Vivienne Westlake. A short, sexy, steamy novella. Lost love, second chances, betrayal and a hero with quite the touch.


Desired by Nicola Cornick. I've read the first 3 books in her Scandalous Women of the Ton series and thoroughly enjoyed it. In this book we revisit Owen Purchase, now a viscount. I love the way the story starts, in a brothel! But not what you're thinking. Tess Darent is hiding in a brothel and she's got some very important papers. Purchase is in pursuit of her.

• What do you think you’ll read next?

Marshal of Hel Dorado by Heather Long. This was a review request and the premise looks promising. Badlands, outlaws, a robbery gone wrong, a fiery redheaded heroine, a gun slinging hero in a ten gallon hat. Oh yeah. Maybe I'll dub this guy Captain Tightpants 2.0.

My Ruthless Prince by Gaelen Foley. The fourth in the Inferno Club series. The nobleman and the gamekeepers daughter. Danger, revenge, hatred, conspiracy, betrayal, desire, passion. What more could a girl ask for in a romance book?

Deliver Me From Darkness by Tes Hilaire. Grabbed this off of Netgalley because the cover was abtastic. (Judge me all you want). 

The Lord of Illusion by Kathryne Kennedy. I've the first book in this series and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is the third book in the Elven Lords series. Kennedy has a way of taking magic and combining it with the real wold of London society.

The moment I read the blurb of Kieran Kramer's latest book, I was humming "Single Ladies" by Beyonce for the rest of the day. Ha! Now you'll be humming it. You're welcome. :)

Oh Kieran Kramer, thank you for the fantastic ab workout. I laughed, I cried, I snorted, I sighed and I giggled.Out of all the Impossible Bachelor series, this one is my favorite. A new spin on the Cinderella story. And you know how I love me a Cinderella story.

The Cinderella Elements:
1. Cinderella. Daisy Montgomery lives with her stepmother, two stepsisters (different as night and day) and two very loyal servants. In desperation, she writes to her godmother in hopes of securing funds to keep the castle running and her family from getting thrown out. She's headstrong, straightforward and compassionate. However, she hates her step-family and blames herself for her father's death.
2. Prince Charming. Okay, he's not a prince but he's a viscount. Charles "Charlie" Thorpe, Viscount Lumley is stinking rich, has property all over the place and doesn't have a care in the world. His family has cut him off, his friends (the other Impossible Bachelors) have married and settled down, he doesn't know what to do with himself. He's currently seeing to his godmother's affairs and Daisy's letter leads him to the middle of nowhere Scotland. A wager with his friends: he couldn't survive being penniless, gets the ball rolling after he shares the letter.
3. Evil stepmother. Mona married Daisy's father, taking advantage of his grief over the death of Daisy's mother. She's mean, she's condescending, she's manipulative and a total she-bitch. She may need a bottle of Rogaine for the bald patches on her head.
4. Mean stepsister #1. Cassandra is a beauty but very shallow. All she cares about is flirting, fripperies and being mean to Daisy. She looks nothing like her mother or her sister.
5. Mean stepsister #2. Perdita looks like a drag queen. She has broad shoulders and doesn't know what an indoor voice is. She's socially awkward, blurts out whatever comes to mind and eats. A lot.
6. Fairy godmother. In lieu of her real godmother, Charlie goes and tries to be at her beck and call.
7. The ball. To raise money, Daisy and Charlie invite the rich people from neighboring villages to a ten day Highland games event which ends with a ceilidh, a dance.
8. The glass slipper. There is a man in the village named Mr. Glass (get it???) who makes slippers, each uniquely tailored for the wearer. Only a loved one can commission the making of the slippers.
9. The tree. Daisy's father bring her a lemon seed and from all the years that the tree grows, only one lemon ever comes into fruition. (In one of the earlier versions, it's a hazel tree. Bet you didn't know that little bit of Cinderella trivia.)
10. Dressing up and going to the ball. Surprise! It's Perdita dressed as the son of a son of a Highlander, in a kilt. Yup, this takes the earlier cross dressing comment and makes it real. It's such a hilarious scene that I may have wet myself from laughing so hard.

FAVORITE QUOTE: "He was half drunk. He was in an ill temper. He was an Impossible Bachelor. With no money. It was hell being poor. He'd found no redeeming value in it. The irony was, whether he was in rags or in a London ballroom, he was pursued for his purse either way."

OVERALL: A fun, flirty and whimsical conclusion to the Impossible Bachelors series. *squee* Oh you guys. I love this book. Daisy and Charlie play off of each other well. Their banter is witty and fun, their chemistry sizzles. I wanted to slap Mona and tell her to quit her bitchin' but the stepsisters (both of them) really surprised me. There's a whole other side to each of them that slowly gets revealed as the story goes along. Of course it's always fun to catch up with the previous Impossible Bachelors and their wives and Ms. Kramer doesn't disappoint. Between trying to keep from getting thrown out, planning a ten day Highland games event, sheering sheep, pretending to be engaged, taking crap from the mean stepsisters and stepmother and secretly sharing passionate kisses comes a story full of love, laughter, forgiveness and a happily ever after in the Highlands. I can't wait to see what Ms. Kramer has next in store for readers. :)

  Review after the jump:
• Kieran Kramer's 3rd installment of her Impossible Bachelors series appropriately titled Cloudy with a Chance of Marriage made me giggle, snort, chuckle, sigh, blush and gasp while reading it. 
• This book is not even close to the children's book about food falling out of the sky. It's a love story (ok, scones and tea are as foodie as it gets). It'll make you laugh, cry, gasp and cheer the hero and heroine on to their HEA. 
• The Story:
• Captain Stephen Arrow, named by Prinny as 1 of 4 Impossible Bachelors, has sold off his commission and taken up his inheritance in a house on Dreare Street, right across from Hodgepodge, the bookstore owned by a certain Miss Jilly Jones. The street is constantly foggy and this contributes to the mood of the people who live on this street. 
• There is a hodgepodge (like that?) of people who live on the street including an artist, a single mother, an angry old lady, a bookseller and her flamboyant friend, and a dashing captain whose friends throw bags of water out of his second story window. 
• Anyway, Jilly has a secret, Stephen wants to fix up his rickety old house and get out of dodge, and the owner of the land that Dreare Street sits on, has raised property taxes. This does not sit well with Jilly so she tries to rally the whole street into coming up with money before the month is over (since payment is due at the end of the month). Of course, a certain diary helped her with this idea: the street shall hold a street fair. This does not sit well with most of the tenants. But then, after some coaxing, they agree. Prinny agrees to come to the fair (after Jilly charms him into it at a ball) and all hell breaks loose. Oops! 
• The people gets the sads again. Then on top of that, they're told that the tax is due 3 days earlier than the original due date. Well, Jilly is determined to raise the funds come hell or high water. Or in this case, fog. 
• Then *queue evil villain music* Jilly's secret is revealed. Stephen feels betrayed. And the game of will they/won't they ensues. And as for the rest, I shall leave you to find out dear reader.
• 5 Things About this Book (what I liked, didn't like, loved, didn't love, don't know how I feel about...)
• 1. Jilly Jones- Jilly has a secret. A secret so big, it could ruin her HEA if she's not careful. She has run away and has set up a new life, with Otis, on Dreare Street. She pretends to be the woman Stephen is courting so he won't be leg shackled to some long lost relatives' daughter. Well, this sham doesn't last long. It becomes a little too real. It's a game of will she/won't she allow Stephen to wiggle his way into her heart.
• 2. Captain Stephen Arrow- Oh Captain, my Captain. Where do I even begin? Stephen had me at hello. He's got a fun group of rowdy friends who throw bags of water off the second story window, high in the instep distant cousins who intrude his house and the most romantic thing to him is dancing a waltz. *sigh*
• 3. Otis- Where do I even begin? Otis is exactly the type of friend I would love to have. He is absolutely hilarious. He dresses flamboyantly and his signature piece of clothing are his bedazzled shoes. Otis has all the best lines. 
• 4. Lady Duchamp- Debby Downer personified. And like Jilly, she's got a secret of her own. I had a like/dislike relationship with her through out the book.
• 5. Lady Tabitha- She is the resident Mean Girl. And boy did I want to slap her every time she showed up, whether at Hodgepodge, a ball or in the street. But since she's a Mean Girl, she'll get a comeuppance. So there!
• 
  
Favorite Quote: "Miss Hartley had that look in her eye--the one that suggested she might already be halfway in love with him. He called it the Bedazzled Virgin look."

Overall: Oh Ms. Kramer, I cannot even begin to put into words, even though I did, how much I adore your Impossible Bachelors series. This book had me giggling, stifling laughter in a corner at Starbucks and once again, having to pack up and go home so I could let all my emotions out. It was indeed a roller coaster of emotions while reading this book. I just adore Ms. Kramer's use of quirky humor in her books and her play on words with her book titles set her books apart from the rest. If you haven't read the first two books of the Impossible Bachelors series, get thee to a bookstore. Like now! P.S. I cannot wait for Lumley's book, If You Give A Girl A Viscount (hope there's cookies involved).

WORD to Brooklyn

Last night was soooooo much fun! I also had myself quite an adventure because me going into NYC usually means something crazy is going to happen. So let's start at the begining shall we...

I must have been on the slowest moving train EVER. Now, normally it takes about 45-50 minutes if I leave from my hometown but this train took me over an hour. I didn't mind too much because I had my iPod and was rocking out to TSwift. Then I met my friend Lisa at the Borders that is right outside Penn Station and after some coffee we headed to Brooklyn.

This is where the adventure starts... we get on the subway... going to wrong way... TWICE! Now mind you, we have gone to WORD before and didn't get lost. Also, for the first time in my life I saw a rat in the subway. I almost died.

Finally! We made it to WORD. I just want to give a shout out to the ladies who work there! You gals are aweosme and so nice! I love going to WORD because I know that I'll be treated like a friend there. There was also champagne and scones there for us to munch on. Then the real fun started!

Maya Rodale, Sarah MacLean and Kieran Kramer sat down and answered questions. All three of them write books set in the Regency and they talked about the restrictions and rules of the time period. Also, they talked about how no one ever mentions that during the Regency the woman didn't shave... or bath that much but Sarah said that she made sure her heroine bathed before ant illict activity.

Here are some other tidbits:

Did you know that Kieran used to work for the CIA? She even went to The Farm (I thought of the movie The Recruit when she said that) She also told us that what Scottish men really wear under their kilts... Not a thing! Trip to Scotland anyone? She also talked about her characters and how they are a little kooky and how maybe we may see her writing something else in the future but she's busy right now with the historicals.

Sarah told us how her title 9 Rules was meant to get her manuscript attention and the title just stuck. Her next series, the Fallen Angles is not a paranormal (though she does admit that JR Ward books are like crack and I agree) and I can't wait to read them! She is also writing another YA book.

Maya talked about how she writes to her title. And she has a great title for her next book... but I can't remember what it is, but it was really good. I really need to take better notes but I was in like serious fan girl mode. She talked about her Writing Girls series and how she likes that her heroines break the norm and have jobs. She talked about her writing process and how she loves to use spreadsheets to plot her books. PS...she was wearing a fabulous jacket!

After the interview sessions the ladies signed some books and seriously they were sooooo nice! Sarah was talking about Rob Lowe and that hot cover of his so we talked about that and since Maya hadn't seen it and I just happened to have a picture of it on my phone I showed her. Kieran and I were tweeting back and forth yesterday and I was so excited to meet her. Then she asked me how my ears were! How cute is that? She knew that I was sick and had some really bad ear infections. I love her! Well, I love them all really!

If you ever get a chance to go to a book signing or something like that where your favorite author is going to be there GO! It was seriously so much fun! I tried to not act like such a fan girl but I think I failed. I forgot to take good notes because I was so caught up in the moment and hanging onto every word. But again, even though I was probably grinning like a fool they were so nice and I felt like I was talking to friends instead of strangers. You Ladies rock!

But that was my night! One I won't forget for a very long time!
