No pumpkin shortage here

Sad news for jack-o-lattern carvers, because of the extremely wet weather conditions in parts of our country this summer, there is a shortage of pumpkins. But thank goodness there is no lack of pumpkins in the digital world such as the irresistible (at least I couldn't resist them)  Candy Corn Jacks by Sassy Cheryl's and the best part is that there is no carving hence, no mess!

Interview with Natasha Blackthorne, Author of Grey's Lady

Do you like your historical romances hot, hot, hot? Do you like erotic historical romance? Of course you do. Are you ready for a change of scenery? How about Jeffersonian America? Intriguing, you say. Meet Natasha Blackthorne, author of Grey's Lady, a story of a seductress, a self-controlled merchant prince and the sexual intimacy that may lead to more than just a physical relationship.
HOWDY NATASHA!

Meet Natasha:
Flirting with the Forbidden…Emotional, Evocative, Erotic Historical Romance from the Georgian and Regency Eras Set in England and America.
Natasha always was a daydreamer who told herself stories of love and romance set in other times and places for her own pleasure. Eventually her story worlds became so real, they demanded to be brought out of the world of imagination and onto the page. It gives her great joy to finally share them with you. She hopes you enjoy my story world.
She is married to her own hero and they share they life with a very quirky calico cat. She is a total history nerd who loves to read. She enjoys literature, romance, psychology, and bits of everything else. She has a BA in History and she especially enjoys studying social history and biography and this is where most of my story ideas come from. She likes to know her characters from the bones outward, the air they breathe, the food they eat, the thoughts and social movements and morals that were influencing them in their times. She also enjoys reading psychology and sociology and literature and enjoys listening to music from many different genres.

Q&A:

K: Tell us about your book with a Natasha twist
N: Grey’s Lady came after I read a book on male-female sexual interactions in Revolutionary and Federalist Philadelphia. In a quiet moment, Grey, the hero, “showed” me the story through his perspective. He was staring out the bookseller’s windows at the rain and the gray sky. He made eye contact with Beth, the heroine and in that moment she touched him deeply with her sadness that mirrored his own feelings that he was disconnected from.
Grey’s Lady is the story of two people who have given up on love. Yet they are empty and unhappy inside so they find solace in using sex to gain power. Grey uses his wealth and sexual skill to make women appreciate him. Beth uses seduction to gain the excitement of conquest over the type of gentlemen that excite her yet is forbidden to her.
When they come together, their attraction is irresistible and explosive. The question becomes can deep sexual intimacy work a miracle and lead to the opening of their hearts? Can they save each other from their isolation, from their auto-suppression of their true selves?

K: Why erotic historical romance?
N: I am fascinated by history and I am also fascinated by the interaction of people at their most intimate and complex levels. Writing erotic historical romance allows me to explore these two areas deeply and it is very satisfying to me.

K: Tell us about your hero and heroine.
N: Grey Sexton, a merchant prince from New York, has come to Philadelphia to gather investors for his privateering voyages. Because of the depredations of both the French and the British, especially with the upcoming war and the current embargo, privateering, and shared risk of investors, became even more attractive. Besides, it was the patriotic thing to do.
All business, Grey lives his life free from emotional attachments and drama. He is in total control of his personal world and likes it that way.

Beth is a dutiful sister and aunt who works hard in her half-brother’s struggling ship. But she’s so bored and feels out of place there. She’s a really impulsive, sensually driven young woman who needs something more from life than just being a good girl. Yet she doesn’t find the men around her to be the kind of man she wants. She’s excited by power. Yet she has been raised to believe these gentlemen are her social betters and thus unattainable. It’s not about money. She wants to prove to herself that even though she’s poor and lacks social position, she can attract and enchant powerful, dynamic gentlemen.

There are deep, painful reasons why she’s driven to do this and that’s something the sequel to Grey’s Lady, White Lace and Promises goes into in deeper detail.

And yes, it’s risky behavior. If she were caught there would be terrible consequences. This is a time of duels and fighting over matters of honor. A man like her brother, who is poor but proud, would have little else but his honor and being protective of his family to feel good about. Beth knows this but the excitement and challenge of the hunt is something she uses to cover over a deeper need that she cannot admit to herself. She loves her family and does not want to shame them. So she tricks herself into believing if she follows certain rules—only meet a gentleman once and always leave them burning for more--she won’t get caught.

Yet Grey’s appeal is too strong. Beth can’t help herself. She breaks her own rule and meets with him a second time. But can deep sexual intimacy they share work a miracle and lead to the opening of their hearts?

K: Was there a particular book or author that introduced you to the romance genre?
N: There was no one book or author. I used to devour historical fiction, as a teenager, historical romance was part of that.

K: What do you have next in store for readers?
N: The second book in the Carte Blanche Series will be coming out from Total E-Bound Dec 26, 2011. It is titled White Lace and Promises and is the sequel to Grey’s Lady. It gets into more depth about the inner demons that trouble Beth and Grey and how they come truly together and overcome them.

The third book in the CB Series is a full-length novel titled Alex’s Angel and it comes out Feb 28, 2012. It is set in Philadelphia, PA 1793.
In the wake of a devastating epidemic, sheltered Emily Eliot finds herself alone, making her own decisions for the first time. When desperation leads her to sell her virtue, she walks straight into trouble.
Enter one gorgeous, golden haired gentleman bent on protecting her…Alexander Dalton came to the Blue Duck Tavern seeking to lose himself in sexual pleasure. Yet when he saw the delicate and vulnerable young woman, he couldn’t turn away. But he needs her to believe in him a lot more than she needs his protection… Alex’s charming smile hides a dark secret that could destroy their chance at happiness. Will their passion burn them up or bring them together?

I also have a full length novel set in the English Regency that is scheduled for release from Total E-Bound April 9, 2012.

They say you can tell a lot about a person with the way they answer either/or questions so let's have a little fun with Natasha.
Either/Or:
1. Alpha or Beta? I prefer the more modern portrayal of the alpha. A strong leader who has an inner emotional side that the heroine brings out.

2. Wallflower or Belle of the Ball? A wallflower who becomes the belle of the ball would be the best.

3. Debutante or Spinster? I enjoy reading about all kinds of heroines. Widows, sadder-but-wiser heroines, bad girls, etc.

4. Titled peer or Working man? I think that a hero, no matter his social station, should have something he believes in and works for.

5. England or America? I can’t pick. I like to read about both settings.

6. Love at first sight or Second chances? I really don’t have a preference between them, I just like a story that is told well and that fits the characters.

7. Virgin widow or Secret baby? Virgin widow.

8. Writing or Reading? In my experience, it’s impossible to be a writer without being an avid reader so this question is really hard to pick between.

9. Authors choice: Ask a question, any question(doesn't have to be an either/or)for the readers.
What would you like to see portrayed more often in a historical romance?

Grey's Lady:
Book one in the Carte Blanche Series
Seeking sexual excitement and conquest, poor but beautiful Beth seduces wealthy merchant prince Grey Sexton, only to find herself the pursued as he seeks to own her body and soul.

Flouting the moral standards of Jeffersonian America, temptress Beth McConnell lets no man touch her heart. Her motto is love them once and leave them burning.
But when she boldly seduces Grey Sexton, a self-controlled merchant prince from New York, she finds herself too fascinated by his ice-over-fire nature to stay away. His possessive determination to own her, body and soul, threatens to expose her secret erotic life to public shame.
But Beth will only surrender her love to a man she can trust. And Grey's materialistic approach to relationships leaves her little reason to believe he can ever give her what she truly needs.
For these two cynical yet lonely people, can deep sexual intimacy work a miracle and lead to the opening of their hearts?

REVIEW and Book Trailer:

Dear Lila DiPasqua,
Please package this book with a cold water bottle so that I can pour it down my shirt while reading.
Love,
Kati R

OMG y'all. This book is HOT, HOT, HOT. I can hear Charles Perrault turning in his grave. Good heavens! Like Sabine trying to describe the hotness of Jules while he was bathing, there are no adequate words to describe this book. Like Jules reading the first sentence of Sabine's journal, I was ensnared. Like the chemistry between Jules and Sabine, this book was bliss.

This is Cinderella like you've never had it re-told before. Yes, there's still a glass slipper. Yes, there is still a Prince Charming. Yes, there are still stepsisters and a stepmother figure. Yes, there is still a Cinderella. Yes, there is still a dead father who leaves his daughter in the hands of the stepmother. Yes, there is still a fairy godmother figure of sorts. Yes, there is still a ball. But that is where the similarities end. I'm sure Cinderella *whispers* did it with Prince Charming after they were wed. But boy oh boy, there's smexing not even 50 pages in and can I just say I was gripping my book so tightly, my knuckles cracked a few times. Oy!

Sabine Laurent has been in love with Jules de Moutier since she was 15 years old. Eight years later, that has changed. Her family is in dire straights (which she blames on the Moutier family) and the only way for her to pay off her father's debt and find her twin sister is to steal silver from a band of men camping in the woods. Mistake #1. The leader of that group of men is none other than Jules. He has grown into a super sexy masculine sex god overlord.

Jules de Moutier's family has been stripped of their home, their land and their title. He has resorted to privateering for the Crown since the fall from grace no longer qualified him to be a part of the Navy. Trying to make his way back into the aristocracy, he is going to use the money from privateering to rebuild his family fortunes and name. Jules gets sidetracked by a forest fairy aka Sabine. Mistake #2. He's been celibate too long and can't resist "Elise".

The chests of silver that Sabine was trying to steal is transferred the next morning, after she gives herself to Jules. She decides to become Jules's lover for the next three days so as to keep an eye on the chests. The chemistry between so hot, they can't keep their hands off of each other. My toes curled, my breath hitched as I read the physical scenes between Jules and Sabine.

Of course their physical bliss is short lived. Jules says something stupid, which reminds Sabine what she was supposed to doing; stealing the chests of silver. Mistake #3. Sabine's eccentric family helps in poisoning (with a sleeping draught of course--don't need a dead hero) Jules and his men so they can steal the remaining chests of silver.

Well, at this point, Sabine and family go back to their home, bury the silver and go on with their daily life. Dun dun dun... Jules finds her and calls her out on her lies. His ribs are broken and need time to heal so he takes over Sabine's room. He discovers her diary, detailing her love for a "Dark Prince." He doesn't want to be jealous, he doesn't want to be attracted to her, but there's just something about her that draws him in.

This is a re-telling of CINDERELLA that you don't want to miss. Seriously. There's so much I want to say but don't want to give any spoilers.

FAVORITE QUOTE: "There we so many things he liked about her. He liked her company. He liked how she'd brought sexual pleasure back into his life. Hell, he'd enjoyed every moment of his time with her. She was adorably bold, beautiful, and bright. Thought he knew he'd never see her again after they parted, the notion left him with an uncommon sense of regret."

OVERALL: Lushly erotic? ABSOLUTELY! Heartbreaking? YES! Romantic? OH MY STARS, yes! Not like that Disney version with the singing and dancing and weird woodland creatures? Thank goodness it's not. This book is a thigh clenching, heart pounding, adrenaline rushing, "did I just moan out loud?" inducing, toe curling, hand gripping book and almost breaking the spine, unputdownable, stay up all night read. Didja get all that? Yes, A MIDNIGHT DANCE was all those things. Pure magic. Well done, Ms. DiPasqua.

P.S. The cover is GORGEOUS! I want to lick it. I may have stroked it a few times. The title is shiny. One of my favorite book covers this year. The only thing that irks me is the way Jules's left hand is spread out. It looks a little awkward. Who does that in real life?

***I won this book from Operation Auction.***

Gramps

Isn't Gramps from Just Inklined the cutest old gent! Besides tall, dark and handsome men, I also like them old but not crotchety. Doesn't Gramps look like Santa? Of course he's not, Santa wears red suspenders and he doesn't need a hearing aid silly!

Interview with Jenn LeBlanc and Derek Hutchins

© Romancing Rakes
Oh dear readers, I had quite the time giggling and being inappropriate with the fabulous Jenn LeBlanc, author of THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE and The Derek Hutchins, cover model and Gideon from THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE. There was supposed to be a video included with this post but, it's not fit for viewing purposes so I will give you a Cliff Notes version of what went on.

First off, we all had issues signing on to Vokle, then Derek couldn't hear us, there was awesome feedback since he had no headphones, we (Jenn and I) giggled a lot, at the beginning Jenn was a one woman show while Derek and I were frozen, there was something about Words with Friends, there were hand gestures involved but we finally got down to the nitty gritty. It somehow ended up being almost an hour. WOWZA!

So without further ado, here is the abridged version of our wonderful night:

Kati: Hi Jenn and Derek.
Jenn: Hi (waves)
Derek: Hello.
lovely screenshot

K: Jenn, let's talk about your book, THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE and the Kickstarter project.
J: For those you not familiar with my book, not sure how that's possible if you're on this site since it's plastered all over the page. (points up and to the side) Scroll down and to your right there's an ad, it's everywhere. Anyway, THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE is an illustrated romance. Derek plays Gideon Alrick Trumbull, 10th Duke of Roxleigh (at this point I whip out the limited edition poster from RomCon).
We are working on the 2nd book, Perry's book. We're trying to get crowd funded to do a fancy studio shoot. We're trying to make it bigger and better than the first book which starred Mr. Hutchins.
Wait, what was the question?
K: Um, your Kickstarter project?
J: Oh right. The Kickstarter project is called Casting Perry. This project would help pay for the studio, the costumes and the models because those damn models, are sooo expensive. I can't even begin to tell you. They cost me a fortune.
D: You get what you pay for Jenn
(cue the giggles and laughter)
J: The great thing about Kickstarter is...
D: How much are you willing to spend?
K: Inappropriate!
J: Hey, hey, keep a lid on it Mr.
J: The great thing about Kickstarter is that you would get great things in return. So if I'm funded and if we get the money we're asking for, you'll get awesome stuff in return. For $1, I'll talk to you on Twitter, for $5 you'll get something else.
K: Okay folks, here's the link. You'll find the prize list on the side for each donation tier.
Click on the pretty picture
J: For $10, $20 you get copies of the original book. It's not like you're just giving me money, you're getting great things in return for pledging money to get this project finished. So, that's the Kickstarter project.
K: Awesome! Don't forget to check out the link above. Okay, Twitter question time.
J: I'm scared.
K: This question is for Derek from Melanie. Twitter handle: kissablysweet1: How did you get into modeling.
D: Hi Melanie. I got my start modeling when I was in college. I was doing some photo shoots, I'm actually a photography major, and so I was doing the shoots on the other side of the camera for some fellow students. I happened to enjoy it a little more. Then Jenn cast me for the roll of Gideon and the career sort of took off from there.
K: Well, thank goodness for that. This question is for Jenn, also from Melanie: What do you wish you had put in the book? What didn't make it off the cutting room floor?
J: Oh gosh.
K: (in which I divert the question. Sorry Melanie.) Pictures?
J: Lots and lots of pictures. I think we shot close to 50,000 images. We're talking about a single image that will have 100-150 variations that go with it so, not 50,000 independent images. Of those, 100-150 are in the book. Some of them are similar or too close. There are also outtakes. The one thing that bothers me most is that there are some beautiful images that did not make it into the book, especially in the printed copy. There's more in the EPUB. This was meant to be an ebook. The printing gets expensive.
K: Are you going to revamp THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE?
J: I am currently going through major edits. Originally THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE was supposed to be a 6 part serial novel and right now, the first 4 parts are published. You get the happy ending, which a romance book is supposed to have, but you're left wondering what's going on with Mr. Rake aka Perry. It's going to have additional scenes and a few more images that got cut.

K: Awesome! Okay, this question is for Derek from Jamie, who is currently drunk at a birthday-a-thon.
(Jenn laughs, Derek looks a little worried)
J: So warning...
D:  Awesome
K: How did you feel about shooting a romance book? Did you have any qualms about doing it? (Ha! That's a totally Words with Friends worthy word.)
D: Um, the only thing I was concerned with was --how come I was so angry when a girl wanted to pull the covers off of me in bed. (Jenn and I giggle). Otherwise, I was completely comfortable and everything. It was my first big project so it was fun.
J: One of the outtake pictures I was talking about. 'Why am I so angry?'
D: I mean, you know, it was out of character for me. I had to re-adjust.
J: You did. You are nothing like Gideon, that's for sure.
D: What are you saying?
J: Nothing. You know, 19th century Duke, 21st century guy...
D: You're casting THE RAKE next, right?
J: Yes, we're casting for the rake. And he looks a lot like his brother.
D: Is his name Derek?
(Jenn shakes her head.)
K: No, Perry. But he looks like a Derek.
J: Nooo, he looks like Gideon.
K: Sorry. I meant Gideon.

(Then Jenn gets a question for Derek on her Facebook Author Page about something highly inappropriate: Derek's choice of underwear. Derek replies by saying people can find the answer on his website.)
Click picture to go to Derek's Site
K: So Derek, if you weren't modeling, what would you be doing now?
D: I'd be designing clothing.
(Jenn and Derek proceed to talk about a place called lululemon and what Jenn should get Derek for his birthday since it's coming up. I interject with something about fans wanting to send him presents. He counters with having fans send presents to Jenn who will then forward to Derek. There was something about paying for Facebook [see, we were totally going off on tangents]. Derek says something about being just a pretty face. Then, the talk of Words with Friends begins. I mention that Derek is kicking my ass at not 1 but 2 games of WwF--simultaneously. Rude.)
Now back on track...
D: They're waiting for me not to speak and take my clothes off.
(sorry ladies, it doesn't happen or I'd share the screenshot with you)
K: So Derek, I hear you're a singer.
D: I do from time to time. I sound best in the shower.
K: Inappropriate!
D: We could put a link to my song.
K: The angry birds song?

(Then there's a lot of laughter. We talk about his singing. He actually wrote a song and it's great. He still hasn't seen the video for his impromptu angry birds song.)
(By this point in the interview-- 30 minute later-- we're spending more time laughing with a lot of randomness.)
K: So Jenn...
J: Jenn, that's me.
K: Yes. You. So, if you can't find Perry, will you be using Derek again?
J: We thought about Derek for Perry for a while before we found Ross. (For those of you who don't know, Ross is Perry in THE RAKE AN THE RECLUSE. He's off being a humanitarian and teaching children English. Go Ross!) The brothers are basically supposed to look like twins except one's older than the other and, he's had a much more difficult life. It's still an option, I really like the option. First I've got to ask him. I think his rates have gone up. Cause he's all famous and shit.
K: Damn models!
(Jenn proceeds to point out the things that have happened since Derek's career took off. A lot of teasing goes on: how much it sucked working with each other [not really])
D: Girls undressing me makes me upset.
J: I told him a bit about Perry. He likes him more. Perry's not as stuffy...
K: And he plays the piano...
J: He plays the piano, the heroine paints on him and there's a bathtub scene...HAWT!
(Then the interview veers off course. Again. There's a little cussing, some had gestures, something about shooting at sunrise...)
J: Okay, let's talk about Derek's project. Where I went to California and shot him in his underwear.
K: I heard you stopped traffic.
J: If you want to know boxers or briefs, you can find out in the look book. I'm currently in the middle of designing it. It'll be out on Amazon in a few weeks or so. As a digital ebook. Not a lot of words.
K: How about Words of Wisdom from Derek?
J: Derek-isms?
D: Dude, those are the best.
K: They've been tweeted.

Jamie Murawski Words of wisdom from "you can rock anything as long as you believe it."Jamie Murawski Words of wisdom from "be a rule breaker not a heart breaker"

J:Yup, tweeted and re-tweeted. Multiple times. So maybe we'll put some Derek-isms in there but it's mostly pictures.
K: So people will get to take Derek everywhere with them. Slightly creepy.
J: This question is from Elena Brown: Where did you get inspiration for the novel? And there's a second question but hold on, I'll answer the first question. So the inspiration for the novel... this is going to sound cheesy but I woke up with the first line and scene in my head. The hounds running after the girl, the horses...
D: Did you see me Jenn?
J: I did. It was so creepy. You were handling those horses quite well and you kept them from killing the girl.
D: I'm quite a good handler.
J: I wanted to write a book for my mom because she had a really great adventure in her life so I was going to give her this adventure. Now Derek's question: How is shooting for a novel different from your other modeling ventures?
D: First off, I've got ask Ms. Brown when she's gonna stop blaming me for the times she couldn't meet up with me in San Francisco. (there's a bit of ooh-ing going on). Now, I'll answer the question. The novel was different because you had to get into character a lot more. All my other shoots were kind of me, being me and showing my personality. The hardest part was getting angry. I'm not an angry person. It was a good learning experience.
J: Seriously, trying to get you and Cora (Francine) angry was ridiculous because Cora laughs at everything. I had her tied up, and I was yanking on ropes and she was still giggling. I'm like--'Cora, pissed. Derek, you're not happy about the naked girl.' Seriously, my job was so difficult.
(There's a bit of randomness then we talk about Twitchy-- the working name for Jenn's next story.)
K: Speaking of Twitchy, let's talk about it.
J: It's a novella, supposed to release in January.
(Jenn is trying to come up with the word to describe the relationship between the characters. I throw out some words but they're not the correct ones. Then Derek interjects asking if he could be cast as the hero. We laugh.)
J: It's a love triangle! It's a difficult one because people love the characters of Hugh, Amelia and Anders. (Then Jenn realizes what Derek just asked.) Are we turning this into a thing? Is Derek going to shoot all my brunette heroes?
(I start babbling about cover models who have shot quite a number of romance covers. I ask Jenn if Twitchy will be illustrated.)
D: It is. It is if I'm the model.
J: It's part of an anthology. So no. I don't it to take away from the other 2 authors work's. However, that doesn't stop me from putting the pictures on my website.
(Another bout of randomness: having Derek on Romance Lately. To which Derek replies--'I'm in.' I reenact what each of the girls on the show would be doing if Derek was a guest.)
J: Let's talk about Trainer Derek. He's been helping me with the Romance Biggest Winner competition that Ashley March started but you're not on my team.
D: Don't give away any of your secret weapons Jenn.
J: I'm not giving away any secret weapons. Nu-uh. I just want to say Derek has been awesome in giving me inspiration and keeping me from eating fried chicken once in a while.
D: Good job Jenn.
J: Thanks Trainer Derek.
K: And you can follow Trainer Derek on Twitter through the hashtag.
(We talk about all the various hashtags on Twitter pertaining to Derek.)
J: He likes to have stalkers. He likes to have people following him at all these places.
K: I guess I'll have to unfollow him now.
D: Uh-oh.
J: He has a fan page on Facebook. We'll link to the 5,000 ways you can find us and we'll have a conversation with you.
(At this point, my video freezes but Derek and Jenn keep talking. I have to reload my browser. Derek thinks about taking his shirt off. Yeah. Nope. Doesn't happen. Then the video blacks out.)

Phew! What an interview. Seriously, after watching it, I asked myself (even Jenn asked me after I told her how long the video was) what in the hell did we talk about for that long???

As you can see from the transcript, we talked about:
WHERE TO FIND JENN: Twitter | Facebook | Tumblr | Author Site | Goodreads
WHERE TO FIND DEREK: Twitter | Facebook | look above for his websites...
Anddd... stalk.

CONGRATULATIONS if you've made it to the end of the interview.

So there you have it. The fabulous Jenn LeBlanc and the ab-tastic Derek Hutchins. Got anything you want to ask Derek or Jenn? Leave it in the comments section.

I'm also giving away 1 (one) ebook copy of Jenn's book, THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE. Fill out the rafflecopter widget thingy for a chance to win. No, Derek is not part of the prize.

A HUGE thank you to both Jenn (slightly sleepy, mostly giggly) and Derek (for finding a not so random webcam) for taking almost an hour out of their Sunday evening to shoot the breeze with me.
